Planning on the way for Carnival 2012
We understand that the memorial sevens are not taking place this year due to new rules and summer Rugby. If you want a carnival please contact Wayne asap.
MEMORIALS 7’S & KIPPAX Carnival 2011 What a cracking day out The memorial 7s and carnival was a resounding success, the weather could not have been kinder to us with wall to wall sunshine all day. the attendance was in the hundreds, crowds of people having a good time with many staying on long after everything had finished. the rugby was skillfull, energetic and well organised, unfortunately Kippax did not win. Apart from our king and Queen Abi Taylor and Ben Thompson the star of the show was the Birds of Prey demonstration, who has ever been so close to a Golden eagle or a vulture as people were on that day, even grown men ducked and cowered as the birds flew close overhead. the smallest vulture was the star of the show and it's antics had people in stitches with laughter. Abbey house Vets sponsored and ran the dog show The winner was unfortunately a woman and had to be disqualified, her husband was not very pleased(private joke on the day) Many thanks to all the organisers, helpers, stallholders, players and most of all to you, the members of the public, who turned up to make the day a success. Getting help with these type of events is very difficult and that’s why so many galas ,groups ect have folded during recent years, Last year we held small events through out the year. The Carnival Group have joined Forces with the Kippax Welfare group to help keep the Memorial 7’s Rugby Event going and the Carnival., Here is some background on the Memorial 7s Rugby Event.
KIPPAX WELFARE A.R.L.F.C. MEMORIAL SEVENS
The Memorial sevens started in the early 70’s when two promising players Barry Ibbotson (who had signed for Bramley) & Stephen Denton (who had signed for Castleford)
Tragically they died in a car accident, and since then Kippax has held the 7’s for over 30 years (the longest tournament in the amateur game).
Nowadays the game is still for the two guys that died, but we remember the players and committee members we’ve lost over the passing years. Phil Whiteside, Robert Shackleton, John Henshaw, Adrian Waters, Ian Battye, Graham Britten, Joe Armitage and also Club member Lyndsey Rudge and many more. Different families and friends celebrate this day with their own memories as well. All we ask is for people to come and enjoy the day and the rugby which although hard is normally played in a good spirit.
Please Remember without your help and support none of these would be possible .
